Supermassive Games confirmed in a statement that the studio will undergo a restructuring. The statement said, “As a result, we are entering into a consultation process which we anticipate will result in the loss of some of our colleagues.” They also added, “Many efforts have been made to avoid this outcome. Therefore, this is not a decision that has been taken lightly.”
Supermassive Games to Lay Off 90 Employees
Supermassive indicates that it is not immune to the “significant challenges” facing the gaming industry. More than 6,000 workers have lost their jobs in the industry since the beginning of the year, and it’s not even March yet. This is an unprecedented number for the gaming sector, and companies don’t seem particularly happy about having to do it.
Meanwhile, independent studio Die Gute Fabrik has halted production due to financial difficulties. The developer of Saltsea Chronicles and Sportsfriends will use the remaining funds to give employees a paid month off to “collect themselves” while searching for new jobs.
The studio is still looking for supporters to help continue production and hopes to bring back current team members in the future. However, the company stated in a release, “The publishing and investment environment is currently so challenging for companies and projects of our scale that securing funding for our next project without a revenue gap is extremely difficult.”
Additionally, according to a report shared on Kotaku, Naughty Dog, the legendary producer of PlayStation games, has laid off a significant portion of its workforce. At least 25 developers attached to the art and production departments reportedly lost their jobs due to downsizing.
